Notices to Mariners

A question has been raised about Notices to Mariners and where they can be found. The three principal sources of on-line information are:-

1. United Kingdom Hydrographic Office which provides searchable notices to mariners organised by NM or Admiralty Chart number. You have to visit the site for new Notices to Mariners.

2. The General Lighthouse Authority (Trinity House in England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar) issues Notices to Mariners relating to Aids to Navigation within its remit and also updated rules and regulations. Its remit extends to 68 lighthouses and 500 buoys, but it also inspects 10,000 local aids to navigation. You can follow Trinity House on Facebook and Twitter, but it does not offer RSS.

3. Local Harbour Authorities, e.g. Port of Blyth or Port of Tyne, issue Notices to Mariners, and if they maintain a website - many do - the Notices will appear there.

If RNYC is notified of a Notice to Mariners we will post it on noticeboards, and on the website. However RNYC makes no attempt to monitor new Notices to Mariners for the benefit of members or the general public. The Hon Editor of the RNYC Sailing Directions selects the information contained in Notices to Mariners for the purpose of updating the Sailing Directions.

ABG

The charity tea party held on board HY Tyne on Sunday 13th May raised the sum of £284 which has been forwarded to help in the fight against Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) a rare disease of a persons connective tissue. The disease was brought to our attention by past rear Commodore Peter Gay whose grandson suffers from it. It was then discovered that relations of other Club members have also suffered from the disease so it seems a fitting charity for us to support.

Nicki Hankinson would also like to say a big thank you to all those who made donations at Dereks funeral. A fantastic total of £1091 was raised for the Marie Curie Nurses fund. A service none of hope to have to use, the nurses at the Newcastle Marie Curie Hospice cared for Derek in his final days.

PC

Mast Work

we intend to clean and paint the house yacht mast during next week. The scaffolding tower arrives and will be erected on Monday. We will sheet as much as we can to prevent debris from falling onto boats. However, it will help us if everyone on D walkway nearest the House Yacht and all yachts at the stern move onto any free berths on the main pontoon system. It will also help if everyone could communicate this around the moorings so that everyone is aware. Clearly it will be better if everyone can keep an eye on their boats during the work and remove any stray debris which should be predominantly old paint and loose rust so that the boats are not marked in any way. Davey Coussons will assist in identifying where you can moor up if Garry or I are not around but I will be there most days next week. If any one can offer a couple of hours of painting or sanding that would also be a big help and they should contact me to let me know. Thanks.

The summer racing kicked off last night with the first Wednesday race, and 8 boats braved the cold and made it to the start line. One crew was still figuring out how the new boat went together, and missed the start by nearly half-an-hour!

Thanks to Diane for setting the course and running the race. The results are online now.

Sunday sees the first RNYC Points series racing. Don't forget that this year, we're having the first race at 10:30 as usual, but we're staying out for the second race. Lunch hours will be extended, so food will still be available when we're done. It should be a busy afternoon in the bar!

Dry-sailing Berths
==================

Just a reminder that boats that are dry-sailing should still complete a moorings form - they're not just for pontoon berths! It means the billing can be worked out correctly and the boatyard team can keep track of which boats in the yard need access to be moved in and out frequently.

Carl
