SAILING TALK .....

Hi,
just a short nudge, tickets are going well for the Adrian Flanagan talk at South Tyneside College next Friday the 14th, however if you have not purchased & need a ‘taster’ log onto http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... _05112008/ to hear him being interviewed by Libby Purvis on radio 4’s midweek programme,, excellent listening! Yesterday he was also interviewed for approx ½ an hour by Jenny Barret on LBC radio, ‘The whole Show’, this one however costs to download! See also the attachment below which makes a great read.

It promises to be a fascinating evenings ‘entertainment’, an opportunity to purchase a signed copy of his book & all funds to the RNLI. Tickets are still on sale at the Marine Store/Polar Front or you can pay on the night (works out more expensive as we don’t want to handle change on the night)

Look forward to seeing you on the night & if you get there early there is food to be had, tombola prizes & of course Adrian’s book ‘Over The Top’.

Rob Storrar.

Ps if anyone has direct contacts with programme editors at radio/TV/newspapers & can bend ears to gain even more publicity can they contact me/Andy on 0191 2661037 ASAP.

OVER THE TOP

The First Lone Yachtsman to Sail Vertically Around The World

by Adrian Flanagan

Published in hardback by Weidenfeld & Nicolson

on 6th November 2008, at £16.99

In May 2008, Adrian Flanagan made history when he completed the first ever single-handed ‘vertical’ circumnavigation of the world. Over The Top tells the story of this remarkable voyage.

In 1975, when Adrian Flanagan was 15, he read Sir Francis Chichester’s account of his record-breaking circumnavigation and a dream began to form. 30 years later, on 28th October 2005, Adrian set sail from England on his quest to voyage vertically around the earth by the most difficult route imaginable, via Cape Horn and the icebound waters of the Russian Arctic.

The challenges would test the limits of his endurance. Only a handful of solo sailors had ever rounded Cape Horn against the prevailing winds. The Russian government had never allowed a single-handed yachtsman to enter their territorial waters.

Adrian mortgaged his house and bought Barrabas, a unique Stainless Steel boat. With limited funds, he persuaded his ex-wife, Louise to manage the expedition. She won the support of Roman Abramovich to navigate the labyrinthine bureaucracy of the Russian government.

On the fifth day of the expedition, Adrian faced death when a rogue wave swept him from the deck. He was chased by pirates off Brazil, dislocated both wrists and, at Cape Horn, Barrabas capsized in a hurricane. Trapped in the ice floes of the high Arctic, he also came to appreciate the fragile balance of the natural world from a perspective that few have ever seen.

After 30,825 miles, Adrian arrived home on 21st May 2008 escorted by warships of the Royal Navy.

Over the Top is the inspirational story of an epic voyage, a life-changing adventure and a dream fulfilled.

‘A fine, fine book, charged with layers of unexpected lyricism. The author makes you feel you’re on the voyage with him, seeing everything through the unflinching prism of his vision and feelings. He captures it all – the unpredictable tumult of sea, sudden shifts in cloud, the volatility of weather, the isolation – wisely and perceptively, in a work destined to be a classic.’ – Campbell Armstrong

Adrian Flanagan’s website is at: www.alphaglobalex.com

For further information or to arrange an interview with Adrian Flanagan and/or Louise Flanagan please contact Elizabeth Allen on 020 7520 4474 or email: elizabeth.allen@orionbooks.co.uk

Storrar Marine Limited
(t) +44 (0)191 266 1037
(f) +44 (0)191 240 0436

(e) andy@storrarmarine.co.uk

RNLI problems ....

RNLI and new Ofcom charges

LIFEBOAT crews fear being scuppered by crippling new charges for using their radios from Ofcom, the communications regulator. The RNLI could see the price of using its VHF emergency frequencies rise to £250,000 under plans to charge the full commercial rate.

The charity, which saves hundreds of lives every year currently pays an annual £48,000 at a discounted rate of 50 per cent. It relies on donations and fears the move will have a disastrous impact on fundraising. Peter Bradley, RNLI operations staff officer, said: 'It's a lot of money when you think in terms of lifeboat days and little old ladies collecting pound coins.'

'We could buy several inshore lifeboats for the same amount.'

'The Government rely on us to provide this search-and-rescue service, at a cost of £124 million a year, but they want to charge us for doing it!'

Ofcom has set out plans to bring 'market forces' into maritime and civil aviation communications in a policy it calls Administered Incentive Pricing.

£250,000 represents an awful lot of charity collections, even more so in the current economic climate so, if like me you feel strongly enough about this, please sign the petition below.

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/RNLI-RF-licences/

BLYTH IN A NEW LIGHT ... TODAY !

As you may be aware the ‘Northumberland Lights’ Winter Festival 2008 will soon be getting underway. Northumberland Lights is part of North East England’s world class programme of festivals and events funded by One North East, Northumberland Strategic Partnership and Northumberland Tourism.

On Sunday 2 November, as a launch for this year’s winter festival, we are again providing an opportunity to see ‘Blyth in a New Light’ as the town’s quayside and park are bought to life through high quality cultural entertainment and architectural lighting. The event is fast becoming known as one of the region’s most impressive displays of its kind attracting audiences of over 25,000 in 2006 and 2007. Blyth in a New Light won a Journal Culture Club award for Best Event Northumberland in 2006 with a further nomination in 2007.

During the day a continental market will provide the chance to experience fine European produce and crafts whilst a quayside fun fair and an ice rink in Ridley Park begin the family entertainment. From 4.30pm onwards street theatre, music and stilt walkers will animate the magically lit Ridley Park.

As the entertainment in the park comes to an end the grand finale will be a stunning firework show along the river and East Pier beginning at approximately 7.30pm.
