1st February 2006
For the 1st Wednesday meeting on 1st February 2006 more than 70 members enjoyed a talk by Gavin Menzies (left), author of 1421 - The year China Discovered the World. He introduced us to the Chinese eunuch Admiral Zheng He's voyages of discovery in the 1420s, decades before the European voyages of Columbus, da Gama and Magellan. The map says it was drawn in 1763 by a map maker called Mo Yi Tong imitating a world chart of 1418 showing the the Barbarians paying tribute to the Ming Dynasty. If genuine, it forces us to reconsider the Euro-centric view of world discovery. To find out more visit the website at www.1421.tv
